Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Empowerment
At Togean Archipelago Voyages, we believe that luxury and sustainability are not mutually exclusive; they are inextricably linked. The pristine beauty of the Togean Islands is our most precious asset, and our license to operate in this delicate ecosystem is a privilege we earn every day through responsible and proactive stewardship. Our commitment extends beyond minimizing our impact; we actively strive to create a positive, lasting legacy for the environment and the local communities who call this paradise home. This philosophy is embedded in every decision we make, from partner selection as detailed in Our Methodology, to the design of our clients’ itineraries.
Environmental Stewardship
Our environmental programs are designed to protect the unique marine and terrestrial biodiversity of the Togean Archipelago, a critical part of the world’s Coral Triangle.
- Carbon Neutral Operations: We meticulously track and calculate the carbon footprint of every journey, including flights, boat travel, and accommodations. We then offset 100% of these emissions by investing in certified carbon sequestration projects, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Kalimantan, which protects vital orangutan habitat.
- Direct Marine Conservation Funding: A significant portion of our profits is dedicated to our Togean Conservation Fund. These funds are donated directly to the Balai Taman Nasional Kepulauan Togean (the National Park Authority) to support their patrol and enforcement activities against illegal fishing, as well as to our partner NGO, the Coral Triangle Center, to fund coral reef monitoring and restoration projects.
- Zero Single-Use Plastics Policy: We enforce a strict ban on single-use plastics across all our operations and with our partners. Guests are provided with personalized, reusable water bottles and tote bags. All provisions are sourced with minimal packaging, and we work with our partner resorts and yachts to install advanced water filtration systems.
- Responsible Waste Management: Waste disposal is a major challenge in remote Indonesia. We have invested in and helped implement comprehensive waste segregation and composting systems with our key partners, ensuring that nothing is discharged into the sea and that organic waste is converted into fertilizer for local gardens.
Community Empowerment & Cultural Preservation
We are guests in the Togean Islands, and we are committed to ensuring that the local communities benefit directly and meaningfully from our presence.
- Local Employment & Skills Training: We maintain a strict policy of hiring at least 80% of our on-the-ground team—including boat crews, guides, and support staff—from the local villages within the Togean Islands. In partnership with Juara Holding Group, we provide ongoing hospitality and safety training (including first aid and STCW certification) to enhance their skills and create long-term career paths.
- The Juara Community Fund: We contribute to a dedicated community fund that supports vital local projects, focusing on education and healthcare. Current initiatives include providing school supplies to the children of Katupat village and funding improvements to the community health clinic (Puskesmas Pembantu) in Malenge.
- Fair-Trade Sourcing: We have established direct, fair-trade relationships with local farmers, fishermen, and artisans. We prioritize sourcing all possible provisions locally, providing a stable and premium market for their goods. Guest amenities and souvenirs are sourced from local craftspeople, ensuring they receive 100% of the profits.
- Ethical Cultural Engagement: We facilitate respectful and authentic interactions with the local cultures, including the renowned Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsy) communities. These experiences are designed in collaboration with village elders to ensure they are not disruptive or exploitative. A portion of the fee for these activities goes directly to a community-managed fund.
Our commitment to sustainability is not a static policy but an evolving practice, guided by our Chief Sustainability Officer, Dr. Rina Wulandari. We are constantly seeking new ways to deepen our positive impact, ensuring that a journey with Togean Archipelago Voyages is not just a vacation, but a meaningful investment in the future of this irreplaceable part of the world.
